چکیده

Background: Group B streptococcus is regarded as a potential factor for adverse outcomes of pregnancy such as preterm birth. Objective: To study the association of maternal vaginal colonization with group B streptococcus (GBS) and preterm labor. Materials and Methods: From April 2005 to May 2006, vaginal culture for GBS were conducted in 101 laboring women with a gestational age of 24-37 weeks and 105 women admitted for term delivery at maternity center of Afzalipour Hospital in Kerman, Iran. Student`s t test and Chi square test were used to compare continuous and categorical data between the groups. Using multivariate logistic regression the association between GBS colonization and preterm labor was analyzed. P-values<0.05 were considered as significant. Results: Colonization was detected in 9.2% of all mothers. Although GBS colonization was found more frequently in preterm than term patients (12 v/s 7 cases), the difference was not statistically significant. However, GBS positivity was roughly associated with preterm labor. Age was also a risk factor for GBS colonization. No case of perinatal sepsis occurred during the study period. Conclusion: Maternal colonization for GBS is relatively low in our center. Increasing age enhances the risk of colonization. Vaginal colonization of GBS is relatively associated with preterm labor.

Colonization of rectovaginal Escherichia coli and group B streptococci in mothers and on infants\' body surface and their related risk factors

Background: Microorganisms that cause early neonatal sepsis are usually already colonized rectovaginal area in mothers. The most common of these organisms is group B streptococci (GBS) and intestinal gram-negative bacteria mostly Escherichia coli (E.coli). The use of prophylactic antibiotics against GBS has increased in recent years. This study aimed to determine the current situation and frequ...

Comparative Molecular and Microbiologic Diagnosis of Vaginal Colonization by Group B Streptococcus in Pregnant Women during Labor

Objective(s) Rapid tests for detection of Streptococcus agalactiae or Group B Streptococci (GBS) at the onset of labor are needed to permit early intrapartum antibiotic prophylaxis. This study aimed to evaluate the PCR assays targeting the 16S ribosomal RNA gene (16S rDNA) for detection of the GBS in comparison with a specific culture method. Materials and Methods Two swabs were used to obta...

Frequency of Group B Streptococcal Colonization in Pregnant Women Aged 35-37 Weeks in Clinical Centers of Shahed University, Tehran, Iran

Background & Objectives: One of the important infectious factors in pregnant mothers and newborns is Group B Streptococcus (GBS). There is no perfect report about prevalence of GBS in Iran and in the case of preterm rupture of amniotic membrane or preterm labor all patients are treated by antibiotics without culture so this has led to adverse taking antibiotics and drug resistance. The...

The prevalence and adverse effects of group B streptococcal colonization during pregnancy.

This study was done to evaluate the prevalence of rectovaginal colonization with group B streptococci among pregnant women who delivered in our center. Also maternal and neonatal complications were compared between colonized and noncolonized groups. Rectovaginal cultures were obtained from 1197 pregnant women with gestational ages greater than 24 weeks who were admitted to the labor room of Zei...
